Moga looks closely at the Harlem Flats in New York City, Black Bottom in Nashville, Swede Hollow in Saint Paul, and the Flats in Los Angeles, to interrogate the connections between a city’s actual landscape and the poverty and social problems that are often concentrated at its literal lowest points. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective on the history of US urban development from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, Moga reveals patterns of inequitable land use, economic dispossession, and social discrimination against immigrants and minorities. In attending to the landscapes of neighborhoods typically considered slums, Moga shows how physical and policy-driven containment has shaped the lives of the urban poor, while wealth and access to resources have been historically concentrated in elevated areas—truly “the heights.” Moga’s innovative framework expands our understanding of how planning and economic segregation alike have molded the American city Urban Lowlands : A History of Neighborhoods, Poverty, and Planning [texte imprimé] / T. Titre : Adolescent Well-Being and ICT Use : Social and Policy Implications Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Hsun Ma Josef Kuo, Auteur ; Cheng Simon, Auteur Editeur : [S.l.] : Springer Nature Switzerland AG Année de publication : 2022. Importance : 229P Présentation : couv.ill Format : 23CM. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-031-04414-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Mental health Social impact Digital behaviour Screen time Social media use Public policy Policy implications Online environments Digital inclusion Education technology Résumé : In this book, the authors expertly examine the issue of adolescent well-being in the light of their exposure to and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) at school and home. The authors discuss a new form of inequality especially noticeable among youth, which is, digital inequality/divide, created through rapid developments in ICT. They analyze the relation between digital divide and educational inequality among youth, describe patterns of social exclusion from technology and education, and discuss related policies in industrialized nations to see how well-being issues can be addressed in this context. Comparing results based on nationally representative and internationally comparative datasets across 28 countries, the authors ask how and why the benefits accruing from ICT are substantially greater for some adolescents, but apparently smaller for others and how such differences may be reduced. They provide policy suggestions that are broadly based in the fields of well-being, secondary education, and technology use. This book is of interest to researchers and students of quality of life and well-being studies and a wide range of social science and education disciplines, including the sociology of education, media sociology, sociology of childhood and adolescence, communication studies, and science and technology education. Titre : Own This! : How Platform Cooperatives Help Workers Build a Democratic Internet Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Trebor Scholz R., Auteur Année de publication : 2023. Importance : 234P Présentation : couv.ill Format : 22CM ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-83976-455-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : What if taxi drivers in New York City or rickshaw operators in Bangalore could start a worker-owned and-operated alternative to Uber with stable hourly wages?
Platform cooperatives reimagine a world where domestic workers can double their income by establishing their own platform—an internet where platforms such as Twitch, Twitter, and Roblox were owned by their streamers, users, and creators. What if small fishing communities in Mexico or farmers in Kerala had the power to determine what data they collected about their work and how they utilized that data?
Platform cooperatives are not a figment of the utopian imagination, but rather a reality that is transforming industries today. Collectives that leverage technology offer an urgent and practical solution to shift how businesses are owned and controlled, allowing workers to make decisions together. In this book, researcher and activist Trebor Scholz explores how these new forms of business, powered by peer principles, are paving the way for a more equitable economy that benefits everyone.
Own This! sets out a program that could change the ways we live, work, and organize.Own This! : How Platform Cooperatives Help Workers Build a Democratic Internet [texte imprimé] / Trebor Scholz R., Auteur . - 2023. . - 234P : couv.ill ; 22CM.
