By answering important challenges to them, the real-world relevance of human rights can be brought out; and people worldwide can be motivated as needed for realizing human rights. Taking a perspective from moral and political philosophy, the book focuses on two challenges to human rights that have until now received little attention, but that need to be addressed if human rights are to remain plausible as a global ideal. Firstly, the challenge of global how, if at all, can one be sincerely committed to human rights in a structurally greatly unequal world that produces widespread inequalities of human rights protection? Secondly, the challenge of future how to adequately include future people in human rights, and how to set adequate priorities between the present and the future, especially in times of climate change? The book also asks whether people worldwide can be motivated to do what it takes to realize human rights. Furthermore, it considers the common and prominent challenges of relativism and of the political abuse of human rights. Titre : Individual and Society : Sociological Social Psychology Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Lizabeth A. Crawford, Auteur Mention d'édition : 3th.ed Editeur : London & New York : Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group Année de publication : 2024 Importance : 573P Présentation : couv.ill Format : 25CM ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-32-29367-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Individual Society Social Interaction Social Behavior Social Structure Identity Self-concept Social Roles Socialization Culture Social Influence Group Dynamics Norms and Values Symbolic Interactionism Résumé : Unlike other texts for undergraduate sociological social psychology courses, Individual and Society covers each of the three research traditions in sociological social psychology―symbolic interactionism, social structure and personality, and group processes and structures. With this approach, the authors make clear the link between sociological social psychology, theory, and methodology. Students will gain a better understanding of how and why social psychologists trained in sociology ask particular kinds of questions; the types of research they are involved in; and how their findings have been, or can be, applied to contemporary societal patterns and problems. This new, third edition makes the emphasis on social inequality within sociological social psychology, a key theme in earlier versions of the book, more salient throughout the text by including new or expanded discussions of intersectionality, positionality, the experiences of gender and sexual minorities, racial microaggression, contemporary social movements, and the complexities of allyship. Other additions to the text address the ubiquity of the Internet and social media, where the authors consider how these phenomena have shaped the experiences of Generation Z, the first “digital natives,” and altered individuals’ self-concepts and social relationships. Engaging exercises and group activities are also embedded within each chapter to enhance students’ readiness to reflect and think critically about the social world around them and to improve their understanding of the different dimensions of sociological social psychology and how they relate to everyday life. Importance : 300P Présentation : couv.ill. Format : 23CM. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Social Theory Sociology Society Social Structures Social Systems Social Change Social Institutions Human Behavior Cultural Analysis Social Relations Power and Authority Modern Society Social Dynamics Philosophical Sociology Index. décimale : EN303.6 : Social conflict Résumé : Originally published in 1968, these ten essays by one of Europe’s leading sociological theorists deal with important issues on the borderline between sociology and social philosophy and demonstrate the author’s deep insight into history and political analysis. The author maintains that the structures of power in which the political process takes place not only originate change and give it direction, but also produce the fertile conflicts that give expression to the fundamental uncertainty of human existence. Through an examination of various concepts inherent in this dynamic process – power, resistance, conflict, change, freedom, uncertainty – a coherent theory of society emerges.
