| Résumé : |
"Dying Abroad offers a sophisticated ethnographic account of how immigrant and minoritized communities navigate end-of-life decisions in countries where they face barriers to political inclusion and equal social standing"
Dying Abroad explores how death, burial practices, and end-of-life decisions among migrant communities in Europe intersect with politics, identity, and belonging. Drawing on ethnographic research in cities such as Berlin and Istanbul, the book examines how migrants navigate cultural, religious, and political boundaries far from their homelands.
The author, Osman Balkan, uses his experience working as an undertaker to provide a unique perspective on the social, cultural, and political dimensions of death for diasporic communities. The book argues that death is not merely a personal or familial matter but is deeply intertwined with questions of citizenship, belonging, and the afterlives of political and social life for migrants in Europe.
Through case studies and fieldwork, Balkan shows how practices surrounding death and burial become sites of negotiation, resistance, and adaptation, revealing broader dynamics of migration, integration, and transnational identity |
